Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest and Austria to the west. The country's capital and largest city is Budapest.

Weather

Hungary has a continental climate, with hot summers with low overall humidity levels but frequent rain showers and mildly cold snowy winters. Average high temperature in the summer is 23 to 28 °C and average low temperature in the winter is −3 to −7 °C. The average yearly rainfall is approximately 600 mm.

Best time to travel
Hungary has four seasons that offer a host of different activities. Depending on interests, any time can be a good time to visit. The most popular time to come is during the summer, particularly August, when the weather is warm and many tourists are on vacation. Summer is an ideal time to visit resort areas such as Lake Balaton. The winter is the least popular time due to cold weather, but prices are the cheapest and there are many concerts and museum events. Spring and fall are ideal times for city breaks, as there are fewer tourists, pleasant weather, and plenty of cultural activities. Budapest is a year-round destination with not much of a big difference between seasons.

Important Info

Emergency Services
The European emergency number 112 is not the only emergency number in Hungary. Alongside 112, the following emergency numbers are available:

There is no specific help for disabled people. It is possible to call 112 from a mobile phone even without a SIM card. 112 calls are answered on average within 55 seconds. In addition to Hungarian, the call can be answered in English, German and in some cases in Romanian. The 112 operator can detect the location of the caller within about 3 minutes.

Electricity
Electricity in Budapest is the European standard 220 Volt, 50Hz with the two round prongs and generally recessed sockets.

Tipping
Hungarians normally give tips when eating out, having a drink at a bar, or when using a taxi. The tip is usually 10% of the price. It is considered rude if you don't give a tip to the waiter.
